Assemble it Yourself Ikea Furniture

!±8± Assemble it Yourself Ikea Furniture

Ikea is private company that sells and distributes home products that are low priced with a twist, you put them together yourself. This concept has taken Ikea to the forefront as a leader in the industry since 1943 when they were created by founder Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden. Ikea furniture is very well known for its modern design and easy to assemble design which saves consumer money from having the pre assembled models shipped.

One big example of this is having a bookcase shipped pre assembled costs a lot more than having one that you assembled shipped. One of the other main reasons as many European's use mass transit which makes it easier for them to transport these products to their homes. This is also very big in the European block, but just finding mild appeal in the United States. This could change as they open more stores and introduce the concept more to American's. There are currently only 33 Ikea stores in the United States so getting this type of furniture has been tough for most.

Having to assemble furniture is nothing new for American's as many products today state some assembly required. The biggest problem with Ikea is there just aren't enough stores around for them to make a bigger impact just yet. Some of the products they offer are garden furniture, coffee tables, bookshelves, hall furniture, dining tables, children's items and so forth. One of the biggest things that it has confronted is a society such as the United States that values their time and hate putting things together. This could explain the slow growth in the United States. The other big reason they have probably struggled is how they have their corporate structure. It's designed in a way to avoid taxes by funneling profits to a nonprofit organization which in the United States would be watched very carefully. I think this could have a lot to do with their slow growth as well.

The Ikea concept has worked well in European countries where an assembly thing is something they are use to and actually enjoy doing. Ikea products are well designed and available in a catalog if you so desire to order any products. They have a vast collection of items at good prices. In the future we may see more of these stores being built as demand for their products grow. The demand for quality furniture priced reasonably has always been something everyone is interested in.

Old-Fashioned Family Kitchen

!±8± Old-Fashioned Family Kitchen

So you've finally decided to take the plunge and redesign your kitchen. Before you take your hatchet to your door frames or rip up the flooring, you'll need a thorough plan of what and how you'd like to reinvent the home's most valuable room. While contemporary kitchens may be ideal for the trendy thirty-something, a cozier, old-fashioned kitchen design is ideal for almost any home.

First things first: you must consider what aged style kitchen is right for your home. The general rule of thumb is to consider safety first; many styles are not conducive to homes with children or pets. Secondly, estimate the functionality of the style. A busy chef might need more space than some vintage remodeling allows. Finally, choose a style that fits the first two criteria and is aesthetically pleasing; chances are, your home improvements will increase your home's overall worth.

1950's: Vintage and Inviting

The 1950's kitchen designs epitomize the "comfort" kitchen. The color scheme includes soft, light colors such as pale blues, yellows and neutrals. Since most homes were much smaller, the colors are inviting, bright and open up smaller spaces. Contrarily, the cabinet knobs in this vintage décor were typically adorned with dark finishes. A focal point of any 50's design, however, includes properly showcasing your odds and ends. Everything from cookbooks, vases and empty milk jugs to even a classic bread box was put on display in open cabinetry units.

Tip: Put a modern twist on this design in your own home and include authentic pop art that emerged during this decade.

1960's: Swinging With Style

Known mostly for Woodstock and Vietnam, this decade's color scheme is quite different from the previous decade. Many homes featured bright blues, deep reds and vibrant yellows, often on tiling that surrounded the waist-high, wall-mounted oven unit. Home hardware typically included either tin cabinetry and matching cabinet handles or oil rubbed wooden cabinets that nicely complemented the influx of stainless steel appliances.

Tip: As a tribute to the beginning of rock and roll, add an mp3 player unit and of course, add songs from legends such as Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Janis Joplin, The Who and Bob Marley.

1970's: Progressive and Comfortable

This decade ushered in the hippie culture, the civil rights movement and the landing on the moon. As for design elements, the 1970's featured a relaxed feel, similar to that of the 1950's. However, colors were either more muted or the brightest colors in the spectrum. Designs often resulted in entirely white or neutral colored kitchens (including the floor!) with contrasting shockingly bright bedrooms and living rooms. And did we mention animal print? That's right. During this decade, bean bag chairs and shag rugs in faux animal print was the grooviest accessory. Kitchen cabinet knobs and cabinetry were primarily wood accented by bold tiling on the backsplash and walls between countertops and shelving units.

Tip: Accessorize by placing various sized candles around the kitchen-- it adds instant ambiance and is less tacky than the ubiquitous lava lamp.

1980's: Big and Bold

Believe it or not, many stylistic elements of today's modern kitchens include a few features that popped up during this decade. Wallpaper was preferred over wall paint, but the cabinetry was quite modern for the time. Made of dark wood, these cabinets are accented with dark stone (often granite) countertops and French country cabinet knobs in rich finishes such as oil rubbed bronze or antiqued chrome. Additionally, many 1980's light fixtures are similar to today's contemporary models that create a focal point in your kitchen. The dramatic lighting combined with the dark countertops and dark wood created a striking, bold kitchen.

Tip: Install a single hanging light fixture or recessed can lighting to create the desired effect. As a bonus, add a dimmer switch to vary the intensity level in your kitchen.

Coffee Shop Culture in Singapore and Malaysia - A Different Art of Coffee Drinking

!±8± Coffee Shop Culture in Singapore and Malaysia - A Different Art of Coffee Drinking

Before there are Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves, most people in the region of Singapore and Malaysia know only kopi, a Baba Malay language for coffee. Kopi is basically robusta coffee. Espresso and cappuccino are extravagant coffee in the early days, meant for the rich, and only available in hotels.

Today, a cup of espresso coffee or any other gourmet coffee still costs a few dollars, and a cup of kopi is only between 70 and 90 Singapore cents.

Latte or long black is unknown in local coffee stalls and kopi tiam. Tiam means shop in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect. Instead it is commonly called kopi, kopi-o, and kopi-c.

Kopi is not brewed in coffee maker, but steep in a tall metal pot with a long spout with a cotton coffee filter, a long cone bag, within. Milk and sugar are not served separately on the table. When you order your kopi, you have coffee with condensed milk, a sweetener, and sugar, already added.

Kopi-o is black coffee, with sugar added. O sounds like black in Hokkien.

Instead of condensed milk, Carnation evaporated milk is added to kopi-c, with sugar. The c stands for Carnation, a brand, even though some have replaced it with other brands.

Most of the early kopi tiam are started by Chinese who are Hainanese. Today their lingo still stays. Ask for kopi-c siu tai, it is coffee with evaporated milk and less sugar in the cup. More sugar, ka tai. But for no sugar, it is kosong, a Malay word which means nothing.

Sarabat stalls are coffee stalls run by Indians and Malays. They are famous for their teh tarik. Teh means tea, and tarik means pull back. A cup of tea with milk and sugar added is then juggled between two cups at an altitude. The original purpose is to lower the temperature of very hot tea for easy drinking on a hot day, for the climate in Singapore and Malaysia most of the year is of summer. However, the action has also produced a foamy top for the tea, much like cappuccino. This spurs the creation of kopiccino, using the same method but instead of tea, it is coffee.

Many migrants came from China in the old days. Chinese meal will always have a cup of Chinese tea besides their food. It is not surprising to find in the local coffee shop and food court, too, that coffee and tea are usually ordered together with meals, much like having a cup of Chinese tea, or ice water in western meal. But for some, hot kopi is still best reserved after a meal.

Nevertheless, for those who still crave for a piece of cheese cake with gourmet coffee, it is still Starbucks, hotels, or café. For others with a budget, Ikea offers value for money for a cup of brewed coffee with cheese cake.

Any opportunities to travel to Singapore and Malaysia, kopi with roti kaya is a must. Roti is bread in Malay, and kaya is a coconut egg jam.

Mid Century Modern Furniture Done Properly

!±8± Mid Century Modern Furniture Done Properly

If you anxiously await the arrival of the next IKEA catalog, then you can understand the dilemma it brings with all the cute, and 'affordable' furniture that they have to offer. Then comes the beauty of attempting to assemble these over complicated and so called simple directions, with products made of particle wood and less than adequate utilities. You begin to realize that the furniture which was just purchased for a significant bargain may not last a move or two. Oh the days of Ikea will soon pass and you'll want to move on to bigger and better things.

Welcome to the new way of functional and beautiful furniture, what happens when you outgrow Ikea and want a more grown up look. Pieces of furniture that not only will last decades if not longer, but is made of the highest quality materials with the idea of function over form. Bulky, poorly designed pieces of furniture don't exist with mid century furniture. The most outstanding part of this type of furniture is the sharp contrast that exists with other furniture types. Modern furniture focuses on the materials used, mixed with a sense of simplicity to offer a beautifully designed, uncluttered, and clean piece that signifies its beauty without being overdone.

You can easily recognize a mid century furnished home within seconds of walking into it. From the tastefully designed layout and implementation of furniture, to the simplicity and airiness found inside of the house. With typically a few pieces of well selected art that mixes so well with the beautiful teak colored woods. Using clean lines mid century furniture continues to be relevant in homes around the world. Though first introduced during the '50s this type of furniture is easily applicable in our daily lives and hasn't lost that sense of modernism that it was originally developed with. Designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Euro Saarinen, Florence Knoll, and Miles van der Rone are all prominent figures in mid century furniture.

Turn the hectic and chaotic life that we are all so familiar with into a haven of simplicity and relaxation with mid century furniture. It's a perfect outlet to express your feelings of function over form and truly creating a stress free home living environment. Sure Ikea may be cheap, but consider the price of the items when you need to replace them every couple of years. With mid century furniture you will have the pieces of furniture for decades to come without ever needing to replace it because of poorly setting it up in the first place.
